Complexities of Emotion

I had an experience the last two weeks that I want to share with you, because I have learned so much about emotions--the layers, the complexity, and the depth of emotion from this experience, and I get to share it because it is my hope that this will support you in your life.

My father is 90 years old; he's lived a magnificent, joyful, productive life of service and goodness. He is at the end of his life, and we put him on hospice.

Two weeks ago, I flew up to Illinois where my mother lives to support her in this effort. We brought daddy home, and we were able to take care of him there in these final weeks and months of his life.

Once I got past the the work part of that--the physicality, getting everything moved, getting the hospice set up, the nurses, etc. I allowed myself to have a moment.

I went upstairs to my childhood bedroom, and sat on my bed. A dear friend of mine texted me and said, "How are you?". She knew what was happening to me. I texted back one word--"sad".

I sat with that sadness. It was just a gentle sadness. I was just weeping a little bit; I mean, it wasn't overwhelming. I decided that I wanted to be with that emotion because they show up in our life for reasons and they're full of information.

This was an experience that I was having in the present moment. This wasn't an old one that came up from before; this was happening in the moment. I'm a firm believer in processing your emotions as they happen. I have entire programs built around this concept.

So, I sat there, in my sadness. I sat in it long enough that there was some warmth that started coming from my body, especially from my abdomen, and that brought me comfort.

I was still sad, and it was still hurting, except there was a beautiful warmth. As I was experiencing the warmth, there was a tenderness that came up, and it was beautiful. I didn't expect that at all. It still hurt, except it was warm and tender with the pain.

I sat there a little longer, and sweetness came up. That surprised me so much. I stayed with that sadness long enough, that I was comforted by the other aspects of the sadness. It was a miracle, as far as I was concerned, that I had this moment of what could have been overwhelming grief and sadness.

And what I'm feeling now is the tenderness and the beauty and the majesty of what happened to me--by staying there with it, allowing it to move itself through me, through my experience, and through my body.

I was blessed by it, and I still am blessed by it.

And it is my hope that you will be blessed by it for having watched this.

Because that's not stuck in my body; it's not crammed down someplace. It's not blocked and trapped and in a place in my body that's going to come out inappropriately at some time. It was felt in a human, in my full humanity.

That emotion that was felt deepened, expressed and processed in a way that I now can talk about it without having any sense of overwhelm, except appreciation and gratitude that it happened.

Emotions are energy in motion.

They are complex. They're deep. They're multifaceted.

Allow yourself to feel them.

Have the intention that when something big comes up, stop what you're doing and allow it to move through you; allow it to express and allow it to bring its blessing.

Its energy.

Personal note: I filmed this vlog on 2/15/22 when Daddy was still alive. He crossed over to his next adventure on 2/17/22. We were so happy with the hospice care he received from the kind, patient professionals of the OSF Hospice Western Region in Illinois. Here is the link to his obituary if you are curious and have a couple of minutes to meet my Dad, Dr. Larry Chadwick.
